The rather grainy photograph is, of course, the Horsehead Nebula. The print is made from a photograph of a
print, hence the increase in contrast and grain. Exposure time about 30 minutes on Tri-X at the prime focus of our 4-cm reflector. Object
in lower left is NGC 2023 (I'm not sure of the number; correct me if I'm wrong).\(Scanned from monochrome reproduction in AstroNotes, just to make matters worse!)

The Horsehead Nebula, as photographed with the 16" telescope at IPO. I used Tri-X film with a 30 min. exposure. Thanks to Roy Fox for making the half tone.

As reported at the January 6 Observer's Group meeting,
Jupiter's red spot is very diminished this year. I did
observe a central-meridian transit of the red spot on
January 18, 1978 at about 23:35 EST. Using the rotation
period of Jupiter, one could determine subsequent transits
for the next few weeks.
The photograph opposite was taken on December 31, 1977,
at 23:30 EST using the 40-cm telescope. Exposure time was
2 seconds on High Contrast Copy film at f/60, eyepiece
projection.(Scanned from monochrome reproduction in AstroNotes)

The photo reproduction in last month's issue of Astronotes was
terrible. In case we have better luck this time, let me try that photo of
Jupiter again. Once more, the picture was taken on December 31,
1977, at 23:30 EST using the Centre's 40-cm telescope. Exposure time
was 2 seconds on High Contrast Copy film at f/60, eyepiece projection.(Scanned from monochrome reproduction in AstroNotes)

become one of the largest in recent years, becoming naked (protect-
